Centro Grandi Strumenti Publication Policy
As acknowledged and noted by many renowned scientific societies and scientists, recognition of the contributions that Core Facility staff make to research is crucial for the development of such facilities and the career progression of individuals. Authorship and acknowledgement are visible metrics by which the success of the Core Facility is measured and help secure support and funding. (1,2,3)
Centro Grandi Strumenti (CGS) requests that researchers using instruments managed by CGS adhere to the following publication policy:
- all publications resulting from the use of instruments within the Core Facility must acknowledge Centro Grandi Strumenti and the Facility involved, e.g. ‘the authors gratefully acknowledge Centro Grandi Strumenti and the *** Facility for their support and assistance in this work’;
- whenever users received a significant help from a particular member of a Facility staff, this member should be acknowledged by name, along with the CGS, e.g. ‘the authors thank *** of Centro Grandi Strumenti *** Facility for his/her/their support and assistance in this work’;
- if scientists from a CGS Facility contributed more than just routine techniques, they should be co-authors of the papers using data generated by the Facility.
Please note that:
-
- development or adaptation of protocols to suit samples or materials, (re)designing experiments, use of advanced instrumental techniques, extensive data analysis and interpretation are non-routine tasks and constitute contributions that merit co-authorship;
- simple acquisitions of raw data or routine sample preparations alone normally would not merit co-authorship but should still be acknowledged.
Acknowledgement must be considered also for the CGS Prototyping lab:
- for maintenance service on equipment, acknowledgements are not required;
- for prototypes produced by the Prototyping Laboratory staff on a third-party project, please refer to points a and b in the previous section;
- for prototypes designed and produced by the Prototyping Laboratory staff or for any solution or technological re-elaboration involving the creative contribution of the staff, it is required to acknowledge the laboratory, along with the centre, and consider co-authorship for the staff members who worked on the project.
