Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique that is used to identify unknown compounds, to quantify known compounds and to elucidate the structure and chemical properties of molecules. Mass spectrometry provides valuable information in a wide range of areas: organic and organometallic molecules are the most analyzed. Detection of compounds can be accomplished with very minute quantities and compounds can be identified at very low concentrations in chemically complex mixtures. These features get mass spectrometry useful in different areas: Environmental (organic pollutants in water, soil, food), Pharmaceutical (identification and quantification of degradation products and impurities in drugs, metabolic products of drugs) Cosmetic (determination of natural allergens in cosmetics and natural extracts) Biotechnology (analysis of proteins and peptides) Forensic medicine (determination of drugs in biological fluids and tissues).
